065: Book Club Review: Effortless by Greg McKeown

When I introduced this Quarters Book Club Book, Effortless by Greg McKeown, I asked you these questions:

Do you ever feel like:

-Things are harder than they used to be?

-You know something is really important but you still struggle to get it done?

-You feel like you’re trying harder but never getting closer to the goals that you’ve set?

-You want to do more, but your energy doesn’t match up?

Well, now that you’ve read the book… do you feel any different?

The goal of the book is to teach us about the effortless state which he defines as: one that you are physically rested, emotionally unburdened, and mentally energized.  You are completely present, attentive, and focused on what’s important in that moment.  You are able to do what matters most with ease.

Here’s a few more things that I picked up from this book that I wanted to share with you today.

-Replace asking, “Why is this so hard?” with “What if this could be easy?”

I’ve done that here and there since I read this book.  Why not make things easier.  If a simple question can change that, I say –give it a try.  I’m here to say that it works.

-Remember Episode 63 where we learned about the Emotional Backpack?  I was able to make a connection with that and this book.  In that episode my guest Lacey suggested that we take off our backpacks sometimes and reassess what is in there.  Do you need to be carrying around the emotions that you have been?  The author of our book suggests the same thing.  He says “Let go of burdens that you don’t need to keep carrying.”

-Here’s one that I really loved that has stuck with me.

He said that you should never do anything today that you can’t completely recover from by tomorrow!

I try to remember this on Saturday’s especially.  I tend to pack too much into one day so that I can rest on Sunday.  But when I do too much, it makes me feel awful on Sunday and I can’t enjoy my resting.  If I’m sore and super tired, I am not truly enjoying a day.

-I liked the steps that he gave for Effortless Action:

Define

Start

Simplify

Progress and

Pace

If you haven’t read this book yet, you are not behind.  BUT I would encourage you to read it.

Life can get heavy and if there is a way to make things feel lighter, less overburdened, I want to share resources on how you can do that.  This book is one of them.

I’ll be introducing our final book club book for the year next week.  It’s one I’ve read once a year for a few years now and I can’t wait to share it with you.

Since you’ll be sitting on the edge of your seat to find out what that book is, I’ve got something for you to do while you wait.

Leave a review for this podcast!  I’d really love to see this podcast shared with more people who could benefit from a friendly bit of loving advice each week.  The way that happens is by you sharing it with a friend and by leaving a review for the show.  When you leave a review, it tells iTunes or Spotify or wherever you’re listening that you like it and that it would be a great idea to have them share it with other people like you.  They’ll link others like us to this podcast and that’s how our community grows.  It’s like magic.  It’s super easy and if you do it right now, you won’t forget.  I’m sending you my thanks in advance.

Thanks for joining me here today and remember:

I see you.  I understand how hard you’re trying, and I’d like to help however I can.

Have a wonderful day and I’ll see you back here next week.
